Mayor & City Council
Mayor's Message

We live in a remarkable community. The summertime celebrations in Pleasant Grove remind me that we live in a blessed time and place. Our Strawberry Days celebration was outstanding, as always. I am deeply grateful to the volunteers and city employees who put in untold hours to ensure a safe and enjoyable week for our residents and visitors. In my mind, nothing beats Strawberry Days.
And what an awesome thing it is to follow up Strawberry Days with the celebration of our country’s independence! I hope we never lose sight of the precious nature of our freedoms, and I hope we teach our young people to value those freedoms and to respect the men and women of our armed services who, as our national anthem states, “stand between [our] loved homes and the war’s desolation.”
I recently had the honor of participating in a welcome home celebration for the citizen-soldiers of the 405th Civil Affairs Battalion, which is based here in Pleasant Grove. These are young men and women who returned from tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. What a pleasure and complete honor it was to shake the hands of these heroes and welcome them home.
Later that same afternoon, I participated in a ceremony honoring U.S. veterans of the Korean War. The program included a brief, heartfelt speech from an official delegate from the government of South Korea. He spoke of the gratitude of his nation on this 60th anniversary of the start of that conflict. He strained to express himself in English, and I had to concentrate on every word, which made what he said so much more meaningful. He said, “It has been 60 years, but our memories are still vivid.” Then he turned directly to the veterans and said, “You came to a place you had never heard of, separating yourselves from your families, perhaps for the last time. We thank you, and we will always thank you.”
It is my fervent hope that we, as a community, will always remember those who “gave the last full measure of devotion” to ensure our liberty, and that we will continue to remember those who serve today. Pleasant Grove is blessed. The United States of America is blessed. Let us always retain in our hearts and remember through our actions these words from the final stanza of our national anthem: “Blessed with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land praise the Power that has made and preserved us a nation.”
